Standing outside her childhood home, Kendra Davies juggled bags of groceries to find the key that would let her into the house where her father still lived alone. The house where she stayed whenever she returned to her hometown of Silent Spring, Montana.
Which was more often than she would have preferred, but considering her fatherâs mental health and gambling addiction, her frequent visits were necessary. Spending two and a half years on her own in Denver had been rewarding, financially and professionally, but thereâd been a toll on her dad. One she hadnât fully appreciated until she returned home for a Christmas visit to discover the place almost bare of furnishings and artwork.
Sold to pay gambling debts.
Now, setting one of her canvas bags on the top step of the simple log cabin home, Kendra found the correct key on her heavy Tiffany & Co. key ring and opened the lock.
âDad? Are you home?â She hesitated at the threshold, listening.
Unwilling to surprise her bachelor father with a guest. She still shuddered to think about the one time sheâd visited unannounced, only to find him entertaining on the floor in front of the fireplace. Not that she begrudged him company. Far from it. If her dad started a steady relationship with someone, it might alleviate some of the depression that was still strongly connected to her motherâs defection a decade ago.
But there was no answer to her call. Her father wasnât home.
Stepping deeper into the house, Kendra deposited the groceries on the kitchen island. The log home had a split floor plan with a bedroom on either side of the common areas. Thereâd been a time when it had felt cozy to the point of cramped with custom-made couches and heavy wooden end tables, and with thick Turkish rugs in brightly colored patterns covering most of the planked floor. All of those were gone now, so that the only piece of furniture in the living room was a secondhand leather sofa Kendra had picked up at a consignment shop so there was at least somewhere to sit.
Kendraâs mother had loved kitchen gadgets too, and all of the high-end appliances were gone as well, leaving the quartz countertops bare except for a cheap, drip coffee maker. Her gaze went to it now as she debated making herself a pot for an afternoon pick-me-up. Her day had been a flat-out sprint since sunup when sheâd awoken to a work call from one of her regular clientsâa well-known fashion and beauty influencer who was perpetually convinced she needed crisis intervention. Today, the woman was positive her dip in social media followers must mean there was some catastrophic news about her brand.
After hunting all morning and into the afternoon, Kendra had traced the data blip to a small organic farm business that had done a blog post about waste in the food industry, citing lavish A-lister parties as a repeat offender in this department. The comments section had then referenced one of the beauty influencerâs parties
